History

Hirasaki was the chief Shinto shrine (ichinomiya) of the old Satsuma Province. It serves today as one of the ichinomiya of Kagoshima Prefecture. ^[2] The kami enshrined is Amaterasu-ōmikami (天照大御神).^[1]

In the former system of ranked Shinto shrines, Watatsu was listed among the third class of nationally significant shrines or Kokuhei Shōsha (国幣小社).^{[citation needed]}
